One popular and yet relatively inexpensive type of tile is called composition tile. This is the most common type of tile for most residential buildings and is made from either asphalt or fiberglass. The majority of brands come with Class A fire protection designation. Of course, there are a few drawbacks. This type of tile may blow off if subjected to severe winds. Also, excessive heat may cause scarring of the material.

Wood is another popular roofing material. Wood gives a traditional yet distinctive appearance. It may also help insulate the home and facilitate air circulation. The downside of wood for your roof is the amount of maintenance required. Like all wood products, wood roofing may rot, split, or suffer damage from termites or mold. Also, many wood roof materials are not rated by fire safety codes which means they may not be as safe when it comes to fire prevention. A material that is very fireproof is metal.

Metal is among the best roofing materials because it is fire-resistant, lightweight, durable and requires little to no maintenance. In addition, metal is an energy efficient material as it absorbs less heat than asphalt. Also many metal roof tiles are made from recycled materials and can be recycled again when removed. It can go directly on top your existing roof, although you will definitely need professional installation. Whether or not metal is right for you really depends on your price range, goals and how long you want your new roof to last. It is certainly the longest lasting material, at least when compared to asphalt and wood.
